Web 2.0: Has it replaced libraries and print publications?

cjmconnors — Sat, 06/07/2008 - 21:28

I was checking out the site for Neologism, a very cool new plugin for Drupal that is still in Alpha. Neologism is an editor for RDF Schema and makes it ridiculously simple to create and publish vocabularies for the Semantic Web. One of the best features, in my mind, is the graph view. Being a visual learner myself, I think it will help people to understand what they are modeling, especially for those new to the ideas of inverse properties, disjoint classes, domains and ranges.

Getting Started with Semantic Technologies

christine — Fri, 05/23/2008 - 02:00

I met a gentleman who was at SemTech for the second time. He was very excited, really jazzed about the whole experience, but still wasn't sure how to win people over back at the office. How could he get them to embrace semantic technologies? It was a hard sell.

I wasn't surprised at all; it's the same song Kevin and I sang when we worked together. We got some great advice from people like Andy Shain and Eric Miller, which I have heard repeated at SemTech each year since.

Take baby steps. Keep it simple.

Getting ready for the 2008 Semantic Technology Conference

christine — Fri, 05/16/2008 - 12:17

Semantic Technology Conference 2008

I am very excited to be heading back to the Semantic Technology Conference in San Jose, CA next week. SemTech has been my number one pick of conferences for the last few years; I am grateful to be among people from whom I can learn a great deal and share challenges as well as successes.

Salad Bars

christine — Fri, 04/11/2008 - 13:38

Would it really be all that difficult for food establishments that have a salad bar to indicate on their various spoons and ladles the measurement of said implement? For example, the ladles for salad dressings - 2Tbsp; the scoops for veggies - 1/2C.

I don't think so. Metadata for real life - what a novel idea!

No, Daniela, you ARE awesome!

christine — Tue, 04/08/2008 - 13:40

I've been meaning to respond to Daniela's post about the Semantic Technology Conference and find, appallingly, that almost a month has gone by!

In it she writes

Ghosts in Second Life?

christine — Sat, 04/05/2008 - 14:48

Not sure why, but I was wondering, in a "does the refrigerator light go out when you close the door" kind of way, what happens to my little-used avatar in Second Life when I'm not logged in. Frankly, it's been months since I've spent some time as my alter-ego; I guess it's simply not a way I like to spend my precious free time.

Prisoner's Dilemma, Nash Equilibria and Data Modeling

christine — Fri, 04/04/2008 - 12:39

The universe has not let me down: I've had a "true" third encounter with the prisoner's dilemma, letting that second person mentioned in my previous blog post off the hook.

Stefano Mazzocchi has posted Nash Equilibria in Non-Cooperative Data Modeling. I'm finding it a fascinating post, akin to some other ideas I've had and will post soon. (Though Stefano is much further advanced in his thinking than I!) I strongly recommend you take a few minutes and check it out.

Prisoner's Dilemma or Boiled Frog?

christine — Wed, 04/02/2008 - 20:54

Three people in less than a week have referred to the "prisoner's dilemma" in conversation with me. Now, to be fair, the second person was probably influenced by the first, who tends to stick to a concept for a week or so at a time and reference it in multiple settings. (Which I think we all tend do do.)

A fresh start!

christine — Tue, 04/01/2008 - 22:03

Welcome to the re-incarnation of my site! I thought it was time for a new look and a new outlook. Poke around, learn a little about me, and visit as often as you'd like!

Best wishes,
Christine
