Tools of the Trade

I am fortunate to have been able to invest in tools that make my bookbinding craft easier and better – tools that ‘up’ my game. There is always ‘another’ tool, and so I will add to these galleries as I am able to share!

  • This 4x6" box has been modified to hold pegs that become a sewing frame.

  • The slit is to pass binding cord through in lieu of sewing keys on the big frame.

  • These tiny craft dowels get banded together to serve as a sewing frame for text-blocks that are bound onto tape or cord.

  • The tools: threads, needles, pins, elastic bands, dowels, mini clothespins, mini bone-folder, mini scissors, mini pencil, beeswax, mini punching cradle (self made) and a mini flower press to serve as a mini book press. (YAY for those little kits at the Barnes & Noble checkout!)

  • Mini-Book Binding Kit

  • Cords will support the quires in this binding. Here they are strung up in the sewing frame so that the quires may be sewn onto them.

  • I frequently use this to treat the wood boards of the books I bind. It is smooth and plausibly period.

  • Very useful press for holding text blocks while piercing sewing stations or adding endbands.

  • This is three separate pieces: a stand, a clamp that holds a text block, with a channel, and the plough frame which trims the edges of a bound text block.
